Message from the Chair

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Velkommen! We’re glad that you’ve come to visit us here at the Scandinavian Section, UCLA’s only Section! Since the Section’s inception back in the 1970s, we’ve been committed to educating students, colleagues and the public about the Nordic region. From language classes in Danish, Finnish, Icelandic (and Old Norse), Norwegian and Swedish, to courses on Scandinavian Crime Fiction, Contemporary Nordic Cinema, and the Vikings, the activities of the Scandinavian Section provide unique insights into the complex and dynamic Nordic region.

We are delighted that you have visited our website and hope that you will decide to stay in touch and remain involved in the life of the section. You are always very welcome at the lectures, symposia and film screenings that we organize throughout the year, and you are of course always welcome to just stop by the Section and enjoy a bit of Nordic “hygge” [cozy hospitality]. You can find a list of upcoming events on our website. For students and recent alumni/æ, the Section is home to the UCLA Scandinavian Club, which sponsors events throughout the year as well. If you would like to send us your news or get more involved with the Section, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line at tango@humnet.ucla.edu.

Despite our efforts and those of our tireless students, because of the on-going financial crisis in the state, the Scandinavian Section finds itself ever more limited in what we can do and what we can offer—in short, we need your support. Your donation, whatever the amount, will help the Section remain an integral part of the UCLA experience and will help our students, both undergraduates and graduate alike, learn more about the Nordic region, through language classes, lectures, symposia and Nordic themed events. I thank you for your continued commitment to the Scandinavian Section at UCLA and look forward to hearing from you or seeing you at a future event.

Best wishes,
Tim Tangherlini
