Scandinavian February Newsletter

Published: February 20, 2018

Welcome to the new Scandinavian newsletter! If you are an undergraduate student in the major/mine, or simply interested in learning more about the Scandinavian community here at UCLA, I want to welcome you to this new feature of the Scandinavian department.

This newsletter will act as a monthly update on ways to connect with the LA community through Scandinavian culture as well as highlight events and research being done by our very own UCLA department.

In addition, there will be featured a monthly meditation drawing from a translation of the poem Havamal, or “Sayings of the High One.” Havamal alternates between the narrator and the voice of Odin, the Norse god of wisdom, to present advice on a variety of topics. Although Vikings may not be widely remembered for their sagely advice, there is something to be gained from examining the virtues they celebrate and the vices they warn away from in this work of Old Norse poetry.

As a student myself, I wanted to create a resource for other students who have an interest in the Scandinavian world. At such a large university, we have the opportunity to explore these niche interests and turn them into careers and passions. So here is a little monthly hello from the Scandinavian department, and I hope this newsletter inspires you to take part in some of the wonderful events happening at UCLA and in Los Angeles.
